Even though this a famous reaction for surface amino functionalization. I have problems with repeatability of this reaction.
What is mica? What conjugation chemistry are you using?
Mica is a mineral ( a poly alumino silicate) which can be purchased as chips. They are atomically flat layers which can be peeled off. When functionalities with ethanolamine hydrochloride it forma a Si-O-C bond between mica and ethanolamine.
Yes, pH play role. The reaction should be carried out at the alkaline side of the pH.
But in literature it's mentioned that in alkaline medium the Si-O-C bond will be cleaved. I thought slightly acidic medium would help.
In mica 11% surface Si atoms carry -OH groups according to literature.
