I'm uncertain as to which compound (NH3-N/NH4-N) does the indophenol blue-hypochlorite method detect? I want to detect ammonia (NH3) in freshwater sample.
In addition, when making the standard solution from NH4Cl, should I be making solution containing, let's said 100 mg per litre of NH4Cl, or NH3, or NH4? Can anyone show me the calculation of the amount of chemical needed?

Ammonia and ammonium is in equilibrium defined by pH. The indophenol reaction is performed in alkaline medium so any ammonium present in the sample will be converted to ammonia. The analysis thus determine the sum of ammonia and ammonium. If you measure the pH of the sample you can calculate how much ammonia and ammonium there was.
