Ethyl acetate is a convenient killing agent for the beetles I'm working with, since ethanol makes their muscles contract, which makes them very rigid and fragile during identification and pinning. We've traditionally used vinegar, but I've been told it's damaging to the DNA. I'm looking for a way to preserve them in the field until I get to the lab, where I can remove a leg and freeze it in ethanol and pin the rest of the beetle. I like ethyl acetate, since it's very easy to operate with it in the field, but when it comes to studies on the effects of different preservatives on PCR success, the findings seem to be inconsistent. Has anyone tried this and how good are the results?
