As a reminder, the mutation of a virus concerns a change in its genome. In the case of the coronavirus, one mutation was of particular interest to the researchers, namely the D614G mutation, which is now present in 69% of sequences. This mutation modifies the structure of the S protein which allows the virus to attach itself to the cell receptors. This modification allows the virus to better infect the cells and therefore to reproduce more rapidly in the body.
The D614G mutation is just one of the many mutations that are inherent to the life of a virus. Researchers have noted 7,551 mutations in the virus since it first appeared. It is therefore important to say that when a mutation causes profound changes in the implications of the virus, it is rather those that will increase its ferocity.
