I'm trying to anticipate how much isoflurane I will be using in a year. I will be anesthetizing about 200 mice for about 10 minutes each mouse over the course of a year. Can anyone approximate how much they might use a year? It doesn't have to be exact, just an average.
I'm getting extremely high amounts based on what I've calculated using info online, like 40 liters per year. I'm hoping that is way off...
I think you may require 1-4 liters depending on how efficiently you use it.
Dear Beth, in principle, it depends on the size of the mask / chamber you are using. For our case (rats), the flowmeter supplied 1000 ml/min pure O2 and, for induction, contained 4% of isoflurane. For sustainment, a flow of 400 ml/min and 2-1% isoflurane were sufficient. Although you might find lower flow rates sufficient, the percentages of isoflurane saturation should stay the same. Hope that helps you with estimating the amount you need!
