Hi All, I am trying to model the flat plate structure using nonlinear analysis in AbaqusCAE 3D solid finite element are used to simulate the concrete material and 3D truss element for the reinforcing bars. The Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model (CDPM) has been used to simulate the concrete material by using C3D8 Brick element. Normal plasticity model has been used for the steel material by using a T3D2 truss element. Embedded element technique adopted to represent the relation between both materials. Where the reinforcing bars elements “the guest” are embedded in the concrete elements “the host”. Furthermore, the element mesh size is 10 cm with element shape structured.

General Steps have been used in this modeling where there are consisting of 10 steps. The restraint is applied at the bottom of column by using pinned (U1, U2, U3 =0). Also, each edge of plate is restrained using roller (U2, U3 = 0) after the gravity loads have been subjected to the structure.

The gravity loads consist of self-weight of concrete and rebar, 30 % of live load, and another superimposed load. Gravity loads are not applied at the surface of plate, but they are determined in material density. Further, the cyclic loading is applied at the top of column using displacement controlled where U1 is value-determined (max 60 mm) using amplitude for reversed displacement.

My problems are, when I run the analysis, 1st until 5th step were fine, but I got warning at the 6th step which stated “the strain increment has exceeded fifty times the strain to cause first yield at 42 points”, “the strain increment is so large that the program will not attempt the plasticity calculation at 1256 points”, “the plasticity/creep/connector friction algorithm did not converge at 206 points”, and “excessive distortion at a total of 509 integration points in solid (continuum) elements”
