I want to use a shortened version of a childhood trauma screening measure (CTQ-SF) in my study. The longer version comes at a charge when I search on the web, and appears to be used to identify children at risk in real life. The shorter version is one I found in a journal article. I have approached both my supervisor and the copyright department of my university for clarification whether I can use the shorter version without paying for it, but it seems everyone are uncertain.
Hi Anki, for non-commercial research purposes, you can use these scales. I send an email to the scale developers when I want to use their scales, yet dont have the evaluation info; or when I dont have the full version of their scales.

If you wish to use the instrument for research it is highly desirable that you forward a copy of your results to us, as this will allow us to build a database on the performance of the Child Trauma Screening Questionnaire.

Unfortunately depends on different country copyright rules. European Union is proposing a clearer definition for research purposes, but not yet in place. Actually the best thing is to approach the authors and explain what you want to do and why. Give them full acknowledgement and you should be fine, unless you want to exploit the results commercially later.
For commercial exploitation, you should be able to get a licence, unless one has been given exclusively to another company. It then becomes a matter for negotiation.
If the study produces interesting data, I naturally hope to turn my dissertation into an article later that I could get published. I am not sure if this counts as commercial use?
Pubishing a paper is not generally considered a commercial use (and certainly not in the UK).
