Decades ago, Laakso and Taagepera developed a measure for effective number of parties, using data for Europe in the mid-20th century. Since, then, that measure (or similar ones, like Golosov's) has been used to study contemporary (post-1970s) political systems. But has anyone applied this systematically to early 20th century Latin American (or other regions)? Besides Coppedge (1998) I can't find any. I'm trying to dig through Google Scholar recommendations, but all of them seem to be measures for contemporary studies.
