I am looking for methods that can be used in historic antropological studies, like meideval text and so forth. I heard a lot about the so called 'verstehen' methods, but thats way too vague. I am looking for good and well operationalized research methods (without any doubt qualitative ones) but can anyone help me out and give some good advice? I have read studies from Huizinga and Elias. Is foucault apporpriate? Thanks in advance.
"Hawaiki, Ancestral Polynesia: An Essay in Historical Anthropology" by Patrick V. Kirch and Robert C. Green (2001) does not deal much with"medieval text" but offers a phylogenetic model (with relation to Sapir's model for cultural change) for historical anthropology. It may be helpful to you, and if not, I believe the bibliography may lead to more fruitful sources.

Why not read works of historical anthropology and see the methods and procedures the authors use? Off the top of my head I suggest Richard Price's FIRST-TIME: THE HISTORICAL VISION OF AN AFRO-AMERICAN PEOPLE, and ALABI'S WORLD. There is also a collection edited by Carole Crumley, HISTORICAL ECOLOGY. Jerome Handler on Barbados is good. Also my articles on seventeenth-century Montserrat, nineteenth-century Montserrat, and the historical ecology of land use in Barbuda. Look also at works by Marshall Sahlins.

I would suggest that the French historian of the Annales School might be of interest there work certainly would fit into the general category of historical anthropology.
I would suggest this classic study as a starting point.
