We tried cutting the HV (and electron amplification) with a fast HV relay, but have a strange and, as of yet, unexplained square after pulse with stereotyped length and an amplitude depending on the illumination history.

We tried a bit with toggling the HV rapidly and synchronously with the illumination which was not very convincing and in the end used a large-aperture shutter (Thorlabs) to physically protect the PMTs. However, the switching time is more of the order of ms (which is not a problem with our frame rate, but quickly will be for higher duty cycles, line scans, point scanning...).
