I’m investigating the experience of designing and implementing a new undergraduate degree. Having been part of the team in charge of the experience, I’ve both first-hand experience and access to all the case documentation. Could anyone lead me to an authoritative voice specifically handling this type of research methodology?

I agree both methodologies consider the researcher’s role an active part inside the ‘case of study’. The question that still puzzles me, though, is the researcher's time position in relation with the phenomenon. If the situation to be investigated is in the pass, then the problem I’m seeing with the two approaches you mentioned is that they require at some point a type of researcher’s interaction with current events. Is that correct or I do miss something? Thanks a lot Tiia, Laurens.
In principle, it is possible to conduct a study also if you only describe past events and still call it a "participant observation" as at that time, you participated in these events.
