I checked the XRD peaks of polyethylene terephthalate. The applied voltage is 40kV and current is 25mA with phi angle 360 degree. There are two broad peak around 23 degree whose intensity is high and another at about 45 degree. What is the meaning of these broad peak? what are the reason behind this image? The graph is attached on the file given below.
Well, compare this XRD signature with the JCPDS of your sample (polyethylene terephthalate), if the peaks you observed matches with the standard data it will confirm that the peaks are from the sample. The broadness of the peak may be attributed to the amorphous nature of the sample. Generally, samples having molecular stresses or disorder results in broad peaks.
Answer from Breuer is recomended in regard of the grain size in general but the information about the szie is not good. The smallest size for crystalline particle is higher than 10nm. For smaller than this the particle will get a molecular form atomic arrangemen which the XRD does not produced. Mostly the curve peaks could represent the very small crystaline form particles. To conferm that the two peaks should be analysed according to the materials crystal structure

thank you everyone. here i treated my PET sample by using non thermal atmospheric pressure argon plasma jet and checked XRD spectra of polyethylene terephthalate. I found as the treatment time increases the broadening of peak slightly increases. i calculate the full width at half maximum of every broad peak control, 1 minutes treated, 3 minutes treated and 5 minutes treated and found 9.9722, 10.42493, 10.43687 and 10.51349 respectively. so why the broadening of peak increases? i use Cu k alpha as the radiation.
