I treated polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan composite film by argon DBD plasma in an ambient air environment. From XPS measurement, new oxygen-containing functional groups are found after plasma treatment. So, the O/C ratio found to be increased, but the atomic percentage of nitrogen (N/C ratio) also increased even though no new nitrogen-containing functional group is detected by XPS. Why N/C increased? I am expecting your good reason. Thank you
Plasma is like a burning, where oxygen and hydrocarbons are reacting to form carbon-dioxide and char. So that would be where some of the carbon atoms go off to, I think.
From what you write it is not quite clear to me if the absolute N content actually increased. If O/C goes up it can be caused by lower C content which will obviously result in an increased N/C ratio.
You should provide N 1s spectra before and after the treatment if you expect meaningful answer
G. Greczynski thank you for your answer. I have N1s peak. when i fit N1s peak there is no new nitrogen containing functional group even though N/C ratio was increased after plasma treatment.
