For the GeneJET RNA purification kit from Thermo Scientific, does anyone know if you can lyse your sample (suspension cells in my case) in the lysis buffer from the kit and then keep the sample at -80C for later extraction of RNA? I know you can do this with TRIzol, but am not sure about this reagent if it would keep the RNA stable or not, as it does not tell you in the kit instructions if one is allowed to freeze the sample in lysis buffer for later extraction. Thank you for any help if you have experience with this!

I looked the kit up and it seems as though it is a GITC based lysis reagent without phenol. Since the protocol mentions checking the buffer for salt precipitation, I'm guessing it also contains a lot of acetate and probably smells like a mixture of chemical and vinegar. I have had worse results freezing samples in this kind of lysis buffer versus lysis reagents like Trizol, Qiazol, Nucleozol etc. which are phenol based. I think pelleting your suspension cells and freezing the pellet until ready to extract RNA is probably safer.

Good luck and update me if you could as I'm facing the same issue but I'm using Qiagen RNeasy mini kit.
In principle it should definitely be possible to freeze lysate in a GITC based buffer versus a phenol based regimen where lomg terms exposure even at low temp will lead to slow degradation of nucleic acid
That said i have not used this particular kit or buffer, so some interesting comments from those who actually have
