Simplified downstream processing techniques are required to reduce the overall cost of bioprocessing of biological products, such as vaccines, antibodies and other recombinant pharmaceutical proteins. I believe that the cost of downstream processing will be reduced if the desired proteins are secreted to the medium. I am wondering here if any one come across an E. coli strain(s) producing extracellular recombinant proteins?

The secretion of a protein depends, wether signal peptide is encoded within the protein sequence, which mediates secretion. This you can realize, when constructing the plasmid for production.
Regarding production host, BL21 DE3 is a good choice. It has a high secretion capacity. It is deficient in Lon protease (cytoplasm) and OmpT protease (outer membrane). Accordingly, it is generally preferred for recombinant protein expression. This strain can be sued to strong promoters such as tac, lac, parapDB, T5. If you want to sue the T/ promoter, you may go for the BL21 DE3 Star, which additionally exhibitis this feature.
