The dynamics of the aqueous humour is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, mainly the sympathetic, regulating its production and parasympathetic (acetylcholine) controlling the evacuation of aqueous humour.
Glaucoma is a consequence of an abnormal increase of intraocular pressure. Ludwig Laqueur was born in 1839 and died in 1909 in Strasbourg. In 1875 he used for the first time physostigmine (an inhibitor of cholinesterase: which increases the effect of acetylcholine) in glaucoma, unknowing about the mechanism of action of the drug. He was himself suffering from glaucoma and was one of his first patient successfully treated. He published a full report of his finding in 1877.
