Enhancing Visual Literacy skills & abilities of great importance for engineering students, but, do you think that current curricula takes this into account? Are engineering students Visually literate?
Majority of universities over the last 30 years have eliminated courses of engineering graphics and descriptive geometry and typically replaced them with a simple course focused on a solid modeling or engineering design without in-depth background of spacial comprehension or what you refer "visual literacy". In general, the number of engineering graphics courses have been reduced in engineering programs all over the world – the United States, Europe, Australia and China. I also have been studying this question and have done research on a quantitative assessment of "graphic literacy" in a context of engineering graphics. Some results can be found by keywords "Quantitative Assessment of the Students’ Engineering Graphics Literacy via Modeling Objects".
