Normally the open access journals must be better and better cited since access to the articles is free, but this isn't the case actually. In my opinion, it is due to the fact that even the other documents are accessible freely.

Closed for me means good journal and value for $$$ (sorry !!)

I prefer this than open . Once in a while I am okay with open ...

I do not know the trust factor , again it depends , if IEEE or other good publications then I am sure they are good and are doing community service with open :)

The availability of certain factors in the journal such as quality, cost of publication, IF and speed of publication are important factors in choosing between traditional journals and OA journals, So even if some of them are available, such as the quality and visibility of the journal, it may help the researcher to prefer OA journals.

I don't see the reason for closed journals to be of higher quality than open ones. As a researcher I favor open science and in that context I think open access journals csn provide more scientific interaction and cooperation, especially in countris like Croatia where finances for science are rather limited.

Not necessary, 'Plant Biotechnology Journal' is one of the top plant-science journals, and it goes open-access. But, it chages $3000 (US) to go on board.

Like everything in life, open access has its good and bad sides.

Advantage : Free for all

The core idea of open access is the basis of its key advantage—articles are freely available for anyone who wishes to read them. For readers and libraries, the benefits of not having to pay for an individual article or journal subscription are obvious. And for those that believe that publically funded research should be freely available to all, mandates to make the outcomes of these funding programs free to the public are now becoming the norm.

Disadvantage 1: Publication fees

While the end user doesn’t have to pay to read an open access article, someone has to pay for the costs of publication. Often, it is the responsibility of the author—perhaps through their employer or a research grant—to cover these costs. In times of austerity and funding cuts, this can discourage researchers from going open access.

Disadvantage 2: Lack of quality control

While not a problem for reputable publishers, some argue that open access models incentivize journals to publish more articles. Journals have to cover their costs and when a large portion of their revenue comes from publication fees, they may be encouraged to publish more articles, with a negative impact on overall quality.

I read some good comments in this thread and especially agree with those of Maher Ali Hussein. There are also some good links that have been referenced. I think one needs to have some familiarity with the journal where you want to publish. Recommendations from professors and colleagues is also a valuable tool.

Open access journals are making their space, but there is a wide variety. Only a few are good with prestige.

As we know, there are OA journals in indexed and non-indexed categories. In my view, all indexed journals are trusted regardless of whether they are OA or not. Indexed OA journals may help to get more reads and hence more citations. However, the OA charges for indexed journals are very high.

Non-indexed OA journals are waste of money, and they normally make no impact even if your paper is good. It only helps to add the number of publications (in less time). There may be some odd cases too.

Open access journals are scholarly journals that are available online to the reader "without financial, legal, or technical barriers. It will be available to all and it will enhance the awareness to the readers. The research have to aim to reach his/her work to many to get benefited.

From my experience, traditional journals do more thorough peer review although this takes longer time than the open access journals. Both have merits and demerits. The problem with open access publishing is that it has been hijacked by predators. One has to choose journals wisely.

In my opinion, I don't think that close access journals are more trusted than open access ones. Why is it close access if not for a subscription fee attached because of the inability of authors to pay the article processing charges for work to be open access.

There are many predator journals like Dr. Emeka rightly say in the open access model but I think the open access journals has reshaped science than the close access.

Yes, indeed, plagiarism is a problem everywhere. I think the internet, especially, intensifies the problem because it is relatively effortless to simply "cut and paste" someone else's written text into a document, email, or blog. We may do so without giving it much thought. Accordingly, though, we need to stress the importance to cut and paste a citation to the original text as Prof. Jacic has pointed out.
