Current peer review system is usually gone through this complaint that most of the times papers are rejected without having a glance at it.Do you think this type of superficial review is good ?
I think, if a good journals and editor usually they will review of our manuscripts in advance whether it is suitable or not for this journal. But if it does not fit, it is worthy to be rejected. Sometimes some journals even refused our manuscript journals just because the writing of English and formatting.
This is totally unfair. Some journals they dont even consider for review eventhough our papers fullfill the scope of the journal. they just say that they have lot of submissions so they cannot send all papers to review so it will be rejected. Before getting impact factor they take all manuscripts that are submitted but once they sense a bit of impact factor their stringency increases (which is good) but at this circumstences they try to neglect good manuscripts also stating that they have too many submissions to handle. This is totally unfair. Atleast few journals are great enough that they tell this decision within a week some journals they keep it for months and finally tell it cannot be reviewed
I'm not writing this to say that which journal (by name) is good or which is bad. Still my concern is that it depends totally on us if we really want to rely on any journal available online. Thousands of journals/publication houses are running core for money not for quality literature purpose. As a researcher it's our own duty to recognize a journal. Personally I rely on Thomson list, with aim not to see any other database. Impact factor given by Thomson I believe, not others.
I have already read the article (mentioned above) published in Science "Who is afraid of Peer review..." if we read the article properly we will find the target journals were mostly taken from DOAJ and other unrecognized journals growing in India and few other countries. Beall's list also provide the some level of truth about fake/predatory journals. However in same paper, there was one reputed journal by Medknow publication also, which decided to stop publication job after they got exposed in this sting operation. That we should call as responsible editor who decided such step after mistake. Other journals may not even be aware that they have been exposed, they don't care also because they get papers from customers who want easy promotion, not from researchers.
A researcher with good aim should never fall trap to unrecognized journals, write best & try good journals, don't worry about paper acceptance rate.
Still it's a problem that many journals don't give any review/reason for rejected paper. Word "out of scope of journal" is just like sympathy.
