I am not an expert to comment on this. Let me share some of my thoughts.
About cow dung research, it is about in which angle we focus on our research matters.
As an example, inorder to study the influence of diet on indegenous microbiome and overall health of Cows, cow dung research is okay. In my knowledge Indian cows gives the high quality milk around the globe. I hope not only the breed, but the food (grass type-its quality) they intake might influence it. It was reported that environment factors which includes diet can influence an individuals mental and physical well being. In humans, there is a strong co-relation between diet and microbiome which in turn affect the overall health of an individual.
If somebody want to study the influence of diet and the milk quality of cows, cow dung based research can also applicable. The classical or omics based approach in cow dung will give an exact picture of composition and functional significance of microbial communities in cow dung. In this case, they need to study the relation between food type and individual microbiome of different cows and correlate with the milk quality. I also like to say that It is not my head ache to answer- Is Microbiome of cow had any relation with its Milk quality?
