When you quote a source, it your obligation to correctly reflect what that source says. But I think that misquoting is hard to detect, because it means checking every single citation.

A good reviewer can detect misquoting of a source and ask you to correct it before publication. Misquoting does not add reliability to ones' results although this could happen by mistake. Anyway, citations' accuracy is a requirement in a scientific research.

I agree, reviewers and the editor should check that quotes are properly written. They also have to make sure that the paper follows the guide for authors and the style adopted, for example APA. When a quote is not correct, the author is simply asked to revise. Errors happen and in my experience most teachers struggle when trying to write an academic paper. They need help and guidance. The rules are complex. The only thing that is unacceptable would to be to deceive the editor and the readers and to steal somebody's work on purpose. But, using plagiarism software and checking sentences on Google is generally efficient enough to detect malpractice. Then, of course, the paper is immediately rejected (It would be much worse for the "author" if people detected plagiarism after the paper was published).

There are various types of plagiarism:

· The most basic and therefore the easiest to detect would be the “copy & paste” type (literal plagiarism), that is when a student or a scholar copies word for word an author’s text and takes credit for it without proper citation (Weber-Wulff, 2011).

· Disguised plagiarism means that the plagiarist made some effort to hide the fact that the text was copied by making some alterations (Lancaster, 2003).

· Shake & Paste means collecting paragraph from various sources. Weber-Wulff (2010) called it “mosaic plagiarism”.

· Paraphrasing is the intentional rewriting of someone else’s ideas, thoughts or research methods without acknowledging the source (Lancaster, 2003). It is close to idea plagiarism (Maurer et al., 2006).

· Plagiarism by Translation means that the plagiarist translated a writer’s work in another language and took credit for it (Weber-Wulff, 2010).

· Technical disguise when someone exploits weaknesses of detection softwares to make content difficult or impossible to detect (Heather, 2010).

· Self-plagiarism means that the author of a work reuses his own published findings to produce a “new” publication (Bretag & Mahmud, 2009). One may re-publish a work on the condition that it is justified and acknowledged and as long as the objective is not to artificially increase one’s citation count (Collberg & Kobourov, 2005).

· Cryptomnesia, or unconscious plagiarism (Marsh, Landau, & Hicks, 1997; Marsh, Ward, & Landau, 1999). For example, Brown & Murphy (1989) showed that cryptomnesia occurred in 3 to 9 % of cases, that is, participants unconsciously plagiarized responses.

What is your attitude about “misrepresenting source ideas or main points without acknowledging it?”

It seems that an important aspect of "misrepresenting source ideas or main points", especially by students/researchers whose first language is not English, is whether or not that misrepresentation was intentional or not. If it is intentional misrepresentation, it is a logical fallacy akin to a strawman attack, while if it is unintentional misrepresentation, there should be an understood and accepted way of correcting one's understanding of another's main point without sounding accusatory or condescending. Thus, the intention of the author is very important here in my opinion.

Upon reviewing various academic misconduct definitions and policies, I also noticed that while some universities address misrepresentation in their academic misconduct policies (such as here: hnu.edu/student-life/student-handbook/academic-conduct/academic-conduct-definitions or here: secure.apa.uoit.ca/academic_integrity/module1/Module15.html), and some consider misrepresentation a form of plagiarism, others view misrepresentation as a separate (and often less problematic) issue that is challenging to identify and address. Thank you for asking this question and for eliciting such helpful responses in the meantime. I believe more focus is needed in this area.
