When food production is moved closer to consumption, the benifits are many; the big one is less energy input per kg. usable food produced. There are also intangible benifits that accrue to producer and consumer both; the re-building of community, the sharing with neighbors, and the awakening and strengthening of your spritual nature; all have positive effects on the planet and on us. But as to technical production methods, a CSA farmer could use any growing system he desires, although, in my view, the farmer, his customers, and the planet would benifit greatly if the method of choice is bio-dynamic, in the Steinerian tradition. CSA, as a method of distribution (and profit, for we must still pay our taxes LOL), gives the committed organic/biodynamic farmer an advantage in the marketplace, in that it allows him to be closer to, and thus in better communication with, his consumers. When that bond transcends the market and becomes friendship and community, both grower and eater prosper, the farmers business grows on good report, and the planet is healed, a small bit at a time.
