About nerve blocks with alcohol for chronic pain: be carefull !!!!!
If the patient is going to live for less than 6 month, the nerve blocks with alcohol will be ok.
If the patient is going to live for more than 6 month, the nerve blocks with alcohol are not indicated, because of the neuronal sprouting, this is, the growth of axons or dendrites from a damaged neuron or from an intact neuron that projects to an area denervated by damage to other neurons. Of course, you can provoke more pain by this procedure.
You may search retrobulbar nerve block and alcohol in pubmed. You will find many papers explaining how to use alcohol in chronic pain treatment and the mechanisms. You may interpret the action of the alcohol and the cautions while administering it in any other peripheral block similarly.
Once I personally saw alcohol injection in epidural catheter. It was extremely painful procedure. The level Th8-Th9. Lidocaine injection followed by Alcohol injection. I observed abdominal muscle fibrillation for 3-4 minutes and then pain relief.
