1 in 100 year floods are becoming common and are addressed reactively in most cases, with hard structures such as levees and dams. In many instances, it becomes evident later that these structures do not serve the purpose adequately. Ecological engineering might provide better solutions, especially because this method attempts flood mitigation in a proactive and more holistic manner.

In Greater Manchester UK, most of the floodplains have been compromised by landfills, housing, industry etc, rendering the watercourses more flashy and without enough floodplain space/volume to accommodate rainfall events. Opportunities arise for borrow pits for road construction enabling flood regulation by amenity lakes. Here is one example, Chorlton Water Park, visible on Google Earth:
