That database does not have firm-level data, it only has country-level and industry-level data, I am interested in how much firm X exported to all countries in all years.
I think you should try writing to federation of chamber of commerce and industry in particular country......or any business association....Custom office is another source...
Hi Tiia, Depends on which firm and which country. Depending on the reporting requirements there are rich sources of data in the UK for example in Company Annual Reports, the production of which is a legal requirement. Check their websites. In the USA SEC submissions will have detailed information on markets and market segments [ http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml ]. There will be similar requirements to report in European Countries I am sure but I am not an expert. The richest source are the Investors section of any international / multinational companies website. BW Matt
I've had a look at some annual reports. In some countries (e.g. Estonia), firms have to provide export data by countries, but in some (e.g Sweden), only local sales and foreign sales without countries. I haven't looked at UK data yet but I'll try.
Hi Tiia just one more suggestion. Case studies are a good source of data, if there is a case on a company you are interested in and the data is recent. Had a look at the University of Tartu Library Database list. They have EBSCOs Business Source Complete. Just search for the names of the companies you want and for "Case Studies". If export is a key business strategy there might be a case with data. Talk to your Librarian as well. Some case material is restricted for teaching use. The other good source are the financial papers Financial Times, Economist and so on as their reports include data to support their news stories. BW Matt
I am especially interested in data that would be useful for determining pathways of internationalization: e.g. if a firm has become a born global, if it has de-internationalized partially or completely... Thus, data for every firm for as many years as possible (preferably all years since foundation, especially if you have data for 10 years or more) about its exports (and/or FDI and/or other foreign operation modes) to every foreign market.
I do not have firm data to suggest but have a look at Cesar Hidalgo's research on exports and imports structure. It can help very much to contextualize exports data from firms.
Hi, i supposed we do have such data. at least since end of the 1990s. the data we have are related to the export value per year and per company. I am not sure, whether we have data by firm and export destination.
if you are interested on sucg data, I will be happy to help. But since we are now on sommer holidays, I will be out of office during the whole january, and will back beginning of february.
This seems interesting! For how many years and for how many firms do you have such data? Can you also identify firms by names or numbers (know that you have data for the same firm for e.g. 1999, ....., 2012)? Do you have turnover by all countries or e.g. only 3 or 5 top countries...? Do you know if these firms are locally owned or foreign-owned...? Maybe you can send me an example (about 1 firm or a list/questionnaire showing what kind of data you have)?
It would be very interesting to find out:
how many firms have totally exited at least 1 export market,
how many have reduced exports to at least 1 market,
how many firms have internationalized very fast (within 3 years since foundation) and how many of these have managed to enter other continents,
how many have internationalized very slowly (e.g. were domestic for 10 years or more before that)...
how e.g. slow and fast internationalizers differ (in terms of average turnover, export share....), how firms that exited at least 1 market differ from firms that did not...
In other words, based on your data, it would be maybe possible to write many different articles.
I am sure we can get interesting insights looking at the data. I will check all your questions and come back to you. as i said we are in vacation, and will return end of january.
Any way, we can kkep in touch, I will be very happy to work on the idea.
Just a thought, can't you use the thompson one banker (Worldscope database) data on foreign sales? Than you can calculate the ratio of foreign sales to total sales. I think that is as close to an export measure as possible.
That data is on firm level and if you know the firm you know the country of origin and the year of the annual report. This is financial data checked by an accountant, so I think that it is reliable data. But the drawback is that you only have data of stock exchange listed firms.
If your interested, I can help you with this approach.
I don't have access to this database, so I would be interested in co-operation, especially if it would be possible to find out how many firms have only experienced foreign sales growth (if possible, since their foundation) and how many also sales decline (once or several times) and if these firms differ in terms of productivity etc. (especially if the database would contain sales by all countries separately, but data on total foreign sales could be used, too).
In the worldscope database the foreign sales measure is the combined sales abroad, so not split out by country. But if you do the big selection with worldscope it will focus your attention to the interesting firms, and with the data of the first screening you can lookup, if it is published by the firm, the sales by country in their annual report.
