I have a 2x2x3 (BBW) design in a 3-way ANOVA and not sure about the family wise type 1 error rate adjustment that I should make for post hoc tests.
I run many post-hoc tests - exploring post hoc tests for multiple different interactions and main effects within the 3-way ANOVA depending on the significance/non-significance of the main analyses (which had 7 total tests which have been adjusted for multiple comparisons accordingly - this is not my issue).
For example, in some post-hoc tests I run some between subjects effects and their respective pairwise comparisons, and in others I run some within-subjects post hoc tests.
My question is do the number of comparisons I make that run up the family wise error apply to each separate post hoc test and set of pairwise comparisons independently of the other post-hoc tests that I do or does it apply to the all of the post-hoc tests that I run across all of separate explorations into interactions and main effects combined given that they exist within the same 3-way ANOVA model (Therefore pooling across and making the potential type 1 error rate unbelievably high)?
Perhaps this is obvious but I can't find a definitive recommendation. I hope I have explained this correctly. There seems to be some disagreement on where family wise comparisons begins and ends.
Thanks!
