For a dataset I'm currently working on, I performed an explanatory factor analysis (principal axis factoring method, direct oblimin rotation), which resulted in the identification of 5 factors. I used the 'Save as variables' command with the regression method to create a new variable to represent each of these 5 factors.

For 4 of the factors, the direction of the individual items contributing to the factor and the newly-created factor score were the same (e.g. high scores for Items 1, 2 and 3 are reflected in a high score for Factor 1). However, on the other factor, the direction of the individual items and the factor score are different (e.g. high scores for Items 4, 5 and 6 are reflected in a low score for Factor 2).

Now that I've realised this, the interpretation of my subsequent analyses is easier. However, in the report I'm writing, I imagine I will have to explain why the directionality of one of these factors (but not the rest) has changed, and that has me flummoxed. Could anyone provide a brief explanation of why this has occurred?

Thanks
