I hope to create a map which compiles all the known areas of D. villosus populations throughout its invasive and native ranges. I understand that several maps already exist but may be slightly out of date. Would anyone be able to direct me to certain maps which they have found useful in the past for locating this invasive species. Or perhaps provide information on locations where published data is not availible.
Current data is from Bij De Vaate (2003) and Wattier (2007) papers. I am yet to compile more, so any information is useful. Thank you.

If you do discover anything about native range rivers etc. which hold populations of Dv i would be very interested. The closest i have come is a russian paper brought out in the 1970's (the nae escapes me) which discusses a termatode parasite ( Plagioporous skrjabini ) infecting Dv in the Volga River, Russia.
Hi Jamie - you might be able to get maps/datasets from individual countries. At the Environment Agency in England we have mapped the distribution in England and Wales since the invasion a couple of years ago. I imagine that similar organisaions across Europe also hold this data. For the EA you should be able to get this data by phoning our customer contact centre, although I know there was some sensitivity about giving out exact monitoring locations.

Hi Jamie, do you know if except the Baltic Sea Dv inhabits any coastal/brackish waters? I mean if it lives in more saline habitats?

I published a study on D. villosus last year for which I had to compile all of its known occurrences in Europe. The map is available in Appendix 1 (Gallardo et al. 2012, Biological Invasions, 14: 1265-1278).

Not yet in Ireland but it is expected. It is known from at least two sites in Britain, easily googled-up.
Thank you all for the information. Monika, Dv has been noted to live in the Caspian Sea by a variety of studies including that of its initial discovery (Sowinskyi 1904; Pjatakova and Tarasov 1996). However populations at these sites have not been checked recently as far as I am aware. However, Belinda, thank you for alerting me to you paper, it should come in very useful. Check out mine (Bojko et al. 2013) in DAO. Its free access to download and should be easy to find on google. It looks at the parasitology of Dv. If you would be interested in sending me samples from your future site visits please get in contact ([email protected]), I would be very grateful. Dan, thanks for your contribution. I hope that we manage to stop Dv before it crosses to Ireland and further to the US. It poses a great threat to native gammarids in US freshwaters, especially in the great lakes. Zebra mussels have already caused a great deal of damage and the impending threat of another ponto caspian invader is scary indeed.
