How can one search for just datasets within a particular institution or department? I tried to search for datasets and the institution's name in the search bar but it came up with a mixed list. Thank you.
There can be several factors which can impact on this request. First, the search algorithm in use may require you to be a lttle more specific. Generally, when you search for multiple keywords, the search algorithm will split the search into a search for each individual keyword. This means you will get a very mixed bag of results, many of which will not be datasets at all. You can resolve this issue by surrounding the query in double quotes, but this will look for the specific string between the quotes. Many search engines will allow you to use a more advanced search query, and you should probably learn how to use these. This can allow you to select multiple filters of what to both include and exclude from the search request, which can get you closer to what you would like to achieve.
The other factor may be that the institution you have chosen to search, may not have yet made all their datasets public, in which case, no matter how good the search algorithm, you will not be able to get access to those.
You can solve this particular issue by writing to the institution, or better still, a specific member of the institution, who might be better able to advise you what is particularly available.
Yet another approach, is to trawl through the instittion web pages to find the areas you are interested in, and see what is published. This is more time consuming, but does let you get right to the type of information you are specifically interested in.
Also, many institutions have their own internal search engine. You can usually use this resource to search specifically for content they hold within their own systems, and this can also be a good way to get to the data you are interested in.
Finally, you could simply do a generic search for datasets, which will search for all publically available datasets, which you could filter using some of the techniques above.
