I have recently started to study calcium and apoptosis. I have read in many reviews that "increased calcium" can trigger apoptosis, but I have not found a more detailed explanation such as the critical cytoplasmic calcium concentration required for this and/or if it is a threshold concentration over a certain time period. Would anybody happen to know this or could please direct me to a review or study that does? Thank you

Dear Myers,
On PubMed, many articles hint towards the finding that it is more imbalances of Ca that induces Apoptosis, rather than elevated Ca. A recent study with Loperamide I found its more an imbalance that induces Apoptosis in mitochondriate eukaryotic cells.

Mitochondrial calcium over load can cause rupture of the mitochondrial membrane which in turn causes the release of pro-apoptotic factors into the cytosol.
