Next generation sequencing (NGS), also called second-generation sequencing

(SGS), or massively parallel sequencing (MPS), has proven capable of sequencing the key forensic genetic markers as well as new forensically important DNA

areas in the chromosomes. NGS is offering better differentiation between individuals in crime cases than the present capillary electrophoresis of Short Tandem

Electrophoresis (STR). Similar improvements are seen in relationship testing that

may be used in e.g. paternity and immigration cases. Prediction of physical traits

may be important in some forensic cases. It has been known for some time that

e.g. the colour of the eyes, hair, skin, etc. is determined by genetic factors. Some

of these genetic factors have been identified. We have now reached a point where

we may use the knowledge of the DNA sequence information of an individual

for the prediction of physical traits, especially eye colour. The use of advanced

NGS-methods is an important resource in such investigations.

The presentation will give an introduction to NGS in forensic genetics, including

identification, relationship testing, prediction of physical traits, and ancestry/biographical origin.
