SARS‐CoV‐2 infections in pregnancy have been associated with increased risk of admission to hospital but not with increased maternal and fetal death, and vertical utero‐transmission.

The pregnant women with COVID-19 are at higher risk of hospitalization and severe disease than are women of the same age who are not pregnant. The good news is that babies are mostly spared a severe respiratory infection, and do not often get sick.
Pregnant women present with varied flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, throat pain, cough, and fever. They also present with features of dyspnea or shortness of breath. Critically ill pregnant women who are COVID-19 positive are monitored and managed with viral pneumonia protocol. Fetomaternal transmission of COVID-19 is still a controversy, and babies born to COVID-19-positive mothers do not have any potential morbidities.
The clinical course of COVID-19 pneumonia in pregnant women has been reported to be similar to that in non-pregnant women. In addition, pregnant women do not appear to be at a higher risk of catching COVID-19 or suffering from more severe disease than other adults of similar age. Moreover, there is currently no evidence that the virus can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or during childbirth.
The course of COVID-19 in pregnant women resembles that of other populations. However, there is no sufficient evidence to establish an idea that COVID-19 would not complicate pregnancy.

COVID-19 is a pandemic affecting every group of people including pregnant and lactating women. Protection of pregnant women from COVID-19 by adopting proper preventive strategies is of utmost importance. There is no proven vertical transmission from the limited data available. Newborn has to be kept in isolation and breastfeeding can be done with routine preventive precautions. Pregnant women should be given equal opportunity to be included in COVID-19 clinical trials including the remdesivir, convalescent plasma and vaccine trials.
