I suspect the answer may be yes in some cases. See http://www.omicsonline.org/widespread-outbreaks-of-a-subtle-condition-leading-to-hospitalisation-and-death-2161-1165.1000137.php?aid=20306 for a general review which suggests CMV may be more 'tricky' than first appreciated. If you email me at [email protected] I will send a draft of another review which touches on the issue of hidden infections and another paper about a curious cycle in the gender ratio at birth which might be due to CMV???
Interesting question. If there is early congenital CMV, affected fetus is less likely to survive if has CMV disease. If fetus is infected and affected at birth, CMV PCR should be positive and as we are aware IgM is not reliable indicator.
