Conference papers were more important in the past. Nowadays, some conferences are being seen more as a network building events than an occasion to discuss and present research outcomes. What is your view on that?
The conference provides the author with a unique opportunity to discuss their results. Sometimes it is possible in the strongest teams, but there one quickly understand the limits of each colleague and what objections can be expected. At the conference, it is impossible to predict some objections and suggestions, as well as useful contacts and acquaintances. These are especially useful for people who work in the absence of strong partners (and therefore sometimes begin to consider themselves great). Although this is not true for every conference.
By the way, the conference banquet is an important part of the scientific program, where the most fruitful discussions often take place and useful contacts arise ;-/).
Think not all the conferences are the same - some may be like what you shared. There are some conferences which are seriously for novice researchers / PhD scholars, seasoned researchers etc. to present their latest research findings which are hot from the research "oven". Personally I find some conference proceedings / research papers generated from conferences are short papers but fairly new research findings vs those published in journals or in text books.
Conference papers and proceedings are q quick way of disseminating new information quickly as opposed to publishing in journals which may take longer time. Conferences are a good place to network and meet with others who are doing similar work.
Conference papers are published in collections called "proceedings": sometimes these are printed by university presses, by professional organizations or simply online.
Since conference papers have a fixed schedule and provide the authors a venue for discussion and feedback, they are generally for earlier-term work or for "announcing an idea", or for finding collaborators. Conference papers tend to have fixed page-limits, which restricts the content to preliminary findings.
