I think its very difficult to measure as the impact can be measured in long run. You can't really see the immediate impact. Using a large population and long time frame can give you some insights about it

A good academic study already has its prize and does not have to measure its validity.

I understand you. I also feel like you. Universities and research centers all over the world are full of research that has been archived in libraries and has no applications for the real world. Even the qualitative and mixed research method has not been able to contribute much to the application of scientific research. This has caused me to work on the research method. Sampling methods and formulas, mental biases, the impact of the values ​​of individuals in real research, the impact of environmental conditions on the responsiveness of individuals, and even the type of makeup and dressing of the interviewer and ... may affect the outcome of the research. These are just part of the main issue. Even if we ask our questions from the entire Statistical population - not just the sample -, is there a guarantee that we will get the same answers tomorrow or a month later?! We are faced with a dynamic organization or society, so our research methods must be constantly updated (and even up to date). I think that the speed of the progress of applied research methods is less than the speed of progress of science, technology and various industries in the world. Not sure where that photo came from.. anyway.. from an entrepreneurial perspective, there are different ways to measure impact, ranging from social impact to the impact of new product/services upon the spin out business' bottom line/balance sheet. Other impacts might include health and well being, how an innovation changes a consumers life (consider mobile phones and how that has changed society). However, from a purely commercial point of view, measuring impact changes across the life cycle of a product/service and indeed across the life cycle of the business. During start-up, measuring 'market fit', is vitally important. This is where research and practice diverges. From experience, research based innovation draws from literature and researchers personal interests and while there are exceptions, these innovations have a very poor market fit . In practice, the entrepreneur or sole inventor will spend a lot of time observing and understanding what the customers pains are and developing a value proposition around a solution. The degree of impact, would then be different for the two scenarios painted here (there maybe more).
