I'm trying to model the bending of a cantilever which is curved in the absence of any applied load. I load the last node of my cantilever with a force and watch it bend. I'm new to Finite Element Modelling and have followed through a couple of guides to Matlab programming of Finite Elements. I used a Plane Frame Element which has degrees of freedom in X, Y and rotation at each node. Does this element decouple the degrees of freedom? If I apply a force in Y direction I only seem to get deflection in Y but with the other end tethered in the real world my cantilever should move in X and Y. Is this the right element to be using? If not what is? Is there an element that I could use where I would get the "correct" (by which I mean push on the end and see deflection in both x and y) behaviour?
