Speaking for the chicken cup: a case study in Chinese art collecting

In 2014, mainland Chinese collector Liu Yiqian bought a Ming dynasty Chenghua-period chicken cup from the European-based Meiyintang collection, at a Sotheby’s auction for US$36 million. The record-breaking price brought public interest to the chicken cup which was well-known in antique collecting circles. The sale focussed attention on the topics of the Chenghua era, Western collectors, and the contemporary mainland Chinese buyers. This thesis examines these three areas to discover the rich and complex representation of the chicken cup over its lifespan of more than 500 years. The study analyses the chicken cup’s transformation from a wine vessel to a collectable antique, and from a work of art to the ‘Holy Grail’ among today’s collectors. Art historical methodologies are employed to assist the discussion in this thesis, including theories of iconography, material culture, biography and social history, connoisseurship and philosophy of aesthetics. The study reveals that the chicken cup often speaks on behalf of extant chicken cups and other antique treasures. Importantly, it epitomises a complicated imperial narrative, provides evidence of the development of Western taste in Chinese aesthetics and exemplifies the ardent pursuits of contemporary mainland buyers. The multifaceted significance demonstrated in this research attempts to fill the academic gap for this eminent piece of historical porcelain, acknowledging the necessity of using multiple viewpoints to adequately evaluate its place in history. I have sent reliable report with digital tools, with several slides to them , they sold knowing they were wrong, just to make money. If my report was wrong, they would not have removed the auction from Sotheby's website, you can also register to see or write to Mr Chown, you have the qualifications to do so, you will see that he will not respond. This fraud will emerge soon. I used the some digital model to uncover another fraud from Christie's in 2018 on a Ming Jare sold for 25 Million USD, a copy even better realized by Castgilione , he inserted optical geometry , inserting incoherence not detectable from human neuronal mechanism spatial vision. Dear Dr.Sundus, here a revised version o Chenghua Chiken Cup, after i found an earlier convex shape, realized by Giuseppe Castiglione with encryped message, showing the roaster head is in reality the Virgin Mary icone, protectress of Jesuit order in 18th Century, like the one sold by Sotheby's in 2014. I have already commented my point of Mr.Chown of Sotheby's as he sold anyway, being aware that was a copy of Castiglione. Possible conflict of interest ? The Meytian collection was owned the grandfather of Mr;Chown, he get certainly a portion of 36 Million US paid by Chinese Collector, as inheritance for descending. My Convex one with the head of the Roaster as icone of Virgin Mary, has more value as is based in ; Rarity and Intellectual complexity, . New Evidence Uncovered: Hidden Underglaze Dragons & Jesuit Optical Mastery in 'Chenghua' Cups – A Further Challenge to Ming Attribution.

Following my preliminary findings and the ongoing discussion regarding the re-attribution of 'Chenghua Chicken Cups' to Giuseppe Castiglione, I am excited to present further groundbreaking visual evidence that profoundly strengthens our hypothesis and deepens the mystery surrounding these iconic pieces.

Through meticulous examination of a newly recovered convex cup, digitally analyzed with CGIP-HDR, we have uncovered two intricately incised dragons underglaze within the interior of the cup itself (see attached image). This discovery is unprecedented for its complexity within such limited and curved dimensions (approx. 8cm diameter, 3.5cm base), demonstrating a level of technical and artistic mastery far beyond conventional Ming anhua techniques.

Key observations:

• Precision in Convexity: The execution of these detailed dragons on a spherical convex interior, maintaining balance and expression, points to an artist with a profound understanding of geometric optics and perspective – a hallmark of Castiglione's European training.

• Hidden Optical Artistry: Like the previously identified "chained man" and "Virgin Mary" on the exterior, these interior dragons utilize subtle trompe l'oeil techniques, likely concealing further Christian iconography, requiring optical tools (not available in 18th-century Qing court) for full revelation.

• Imperial Significance: The presence of five-clawed dragons unequivocally designates these cups for imperial use, supporting our theory of commission for high-ranking individuals like Prince Sunu, or even Emperor Qianlong himself.

• The "Signal" Line: A consistent, fine yellow line 1.5mm below the rim (where the glaze ends) across all six acquired cups suggests a deliberate marker, possibly a clandestine "signal" for the initiated to observe the hidden interior. This is unlikely a firing flaw.

These findings solidify the argument that these are not Ming Chenghua wares, but rather extraordinary 18th-century creations by Castiglione, pushing the boundaries of porcelain art, scientific application, and encrypted communication during a period of religious sensitivity.
