I intend to use fracture energy to control softening region (Smeared crack approach).
As I know, to use this model we have to determine characteristic element length.
Currently, I am using element C3D8, (8-node linear brick).
Could you give me an idea of how to calculate it?
Does ABAQUS provide us this parameter and how to call it if UMAT is used?

Characteristic element length(L*) in Abaqus defined as minimum length of an element. In computational analysis, to simplify for 1-D element it is length of the element, for 2-D element it is square root of area of the element, and so on.
In User-material subroutine (UMAT), you can use CELENT parameter to define characteristic length of element .In Abaqus documentation you can find more. For more information about how to calculate characteristic element length I suggest you to read Oliver (1989) paper.

I see UMAT and VUMAT provide CELENT parameter.
Could you help me how to take the value of CELENT with different element sizes with UMAT?
This aims to calibrate the same fracture energy for different element.
