CD stands for "Cesarean-derived." At some point somebody---probably the vendor---has attempted to clean the line up by reducing the opportunity for microbe transfer during natural birth. Investigators referring to "CD rats" usually mean outbred Sprague Dawley CD rats; this is a very common strain sold by Charles River; it has the official name of CD (SD) IGS. Fischer and Sprague Dawley rats are not the same. However, Charles River Fischer (CDF) rats are not much more expensive than CD (SD) IGS rats.
