Depends on the journal. Scientific Reports allows videos as supplementary material (see https://www.nature.com/articles/srep34352) and because it is OA you can also publish the same videos on external sites (we had that species on youtube until quite recently, not sure what happened). Pensoft journals such as Biodiversity Data Journal and Zookeys even allow you to embed videos in the articles themselves, see e.g. Article A new type of ant-decapitation in the Phoridae (Insecta: Diptera)

Santiago - I agree with Gunnar that it does depend - but I have no problem with it in the correct context. I like a 'funny' sceintific Youtube video as much as the next person - and some have some real 'gems' of information - especially in my field of public health eand health education. That said, how many hits does a 'dry' academic Youtube video truely receive - with citation etc. Not many I would argue - so one might as well just stick with coventional journal styles. One also has to get past the 'scrutiny' of reviewers and editors first, as well, who mostly likely would say 'no' - much as with say Wikipedia.

I am working on a manuscript describing the courtship, feeding and hunting behavior of a diptera species, and those videos can really bring up a very cool addition to the text, so reviewers and general readers can see what I was describing with a video, and I think that is a very interesting plus to the manuscript.

But in my search for journals, I couldnt find many journals that use videos as supplementary material, that is why I was thinking about using youtube as a video streaming tool.

But since must journals and youtube are monetary, I thought that might creat a conflict.
