I have had no lessons in German, but find I need to read some old German medical papers not translated into English.   I actually find that it is easier to follow very technical papers since the guessable technical terms or jargon give structure to the paper.  It is the common short words and expressions I struggle with.

Try mine: A New Model for the Human Psyche. My second language is English and I am suffering a hell lot of atrocities for more than 14 years, so that it is quite possible that you will be able to fix the English in the article with them and use that, together with its contents as a teaching tool.

thanks for your suggestion. However, I think your suggestion of using an article and looking at ways of improving its language would be a task better suited to advanced (academic) English learners as you need to have a very good grasp of the English language already. The students I taught were first-year students and most of them found it a big challenge reading an academic article to begin with.

Just a quick note after having taught the class now: the article by Keysar et al. (2012) was way too difficult for the students, I would not pick that text for first-year's again.

Hi, David - In case you are keeping a folder of short, interesting articles for first-year students, I'd like to recommend "Mind over milkshakes: Mindsets, not nutrients, determine ghrelin response." I've used it in my undergrad classes with great success, as it intrigues them to think of 'mind over matter' in a scientific study.  BTW, thanks for making your question and the responses available. I'm always looking for something new to use!
