TO HELP THEM OFF DEPRESSION METHODICALLY
1-Be clear in your mind that they need medication and therapy, and project this. Encourage them to continue both. Make it clear it's now the new routine.
2. There should be Guide Dogs for the Depressed. If the depressed loved-one or client in your life doesn't have a companion pet, give them a well-trained, easy-to-manage, older one. This is particularly important if they live alone. Specify that you will take care of the dog in terms of vet care and bills, and provide a starter-kit--huge bag of dog food and container, food and water dishes, bedding, etc. In other words, make it easy for them to accept this healing gift. I have a depressed coaching client in Manhattan suffering the aftermath of Nine One One who mostly talks to me about her beloved companion dog. I consider “Cody” part of the healing team for this woman.
3. Make any decision you can for the person. In other words, don't say "Would you like to go out for dinner tonight? Where would you like to go?" Say instead, "We're going to Bijan's tomorrow night for dinner. I'll pick you up at 7:00. Just wear your jeans." Once there, offer to order for the person.
4. Speak in normal, modulated tones. Avoid an overly-'compassionate' look of concern or a patronizing tone of voice. If they have trouble making a decision or remembering something, keep your eyes from looking overly concerned or worried. This will only add to their worry and confusion.
5. Just be with them. Don't hover, try to cheer them up, argue, try to 'get a rise out of them,' or ask them 'talk about it.' Cognitive processes are slowed, and emotionally, they're in conflict. Under those circumstances, it's difficult to talk. It's hard to connect with people, even best-beloved ones, when you're clinically depressed--hard to maintain eye-contact and to follow long sentences and thoughts. A metaphor I use is play lacrosse with them, don't face off with them on the football line. Be 'around' them, not 'in their face.'
6. Don't put them in a position that would arouse emotions. Celebrations, holidays, receiving gifts, or a long discourse on foreign policy all require a level of involvement the depressed person is not capable of.
7. Be grounded and stay centered yourself. Remind yourself of your love for them that will endure "even this."

Dear Prof Abhijit, let the depressed eat and drink good and healthy food, listen to good classical music (I attach a paper of my literature review), and let them listen to good jokes, or even to read funny things. I love to read Readers' Digest, there's a small section 'Laughter, the best medicine'. However depressed, or sad, I will laugh. Besides, depression is bad for the brain and for our health. When my friend and I both had our fathers suffering from massive strokes it does not seem like a time to rejoice. Yet but God used that calamity to allow both of our fathers to come to Christ and both passed in peace. Hallelujah.
When I came to identify my father after his passing he was frozen and will a smile. My mother who did not have a close personal relationship had a tortured look at her passing. The director said to me is this your father for identification and nodded yes.
After a while I started to laugh.... here I was preparing for the funeral and arrangements of incineration according to h(H)is wishes he wanted cremation and the ashes be spread on the earth he loved as a farm boy.

Are we afraid of what others might think if we just let go? Do we fear not being controlled in our expression?
Besides laughter there is no problem with music, singing and dancing. Yet, I think we do not do these positive things because of fear of judgment.
We are spectators who do not always participate. Yet the get gain is in participation with spectating being the lesser part.
I believe we need to develop safe zones when people can participate. If people do not express themselves in a concert hall then why not emphasis small familiar group settings.
Depression is a very individual vocation and when we group up are we not more able to overcome our challenges.
In a World of such need is it selfish to depressed when there are so many in worse situation then ourselves.
As a small boy when I was fearful and could not reach a state of peaceful sleep my mother would suggest visiting a beautiful garden. As I would follow my mother's thoughts wandering through the imaginary garden it became real and before I knew it I was secure and asleep.
When we become aware that this present thought determines our next moment reality we start to see the optimistic even when wrong will lead a better life than a pessimistic who cannot help to project their reality just like the optimist.
No matter what thoughts fly through your minds we have capacity to screen them in many ways. Contemplate and meditate on all that is good. Will it help? One thing I know it cannot hurt and that's an improvement.
