If a person has a stock solution of IL-4 at 10 ng/mL in a 50 mL conical tube and needs to add IL-4 at 50 ng/mL to 2 mL of media, can this stock be used for this purpose?
I'm asking because from my point of view this is not something I would think to do (I don't see how this can be done), but I would like to clarify this.
I guess that the meaning 10 ng/mL and 50 ng/mL is "amount of nanograms of an ingredient in one mililitre of the liquid solution" (the concentration of an ingredient).
You have 2 mL of the liquid solution with the concentration 50 ng/mL but you need to have more of it. You consider blending with/adding to it some amount of the liquid solution with the concentration 10 ng/mL and you want to keep the concentration 50 ng/mL.
No way. Adding one the liquid solution to another results in the concentration which is equal to some value between the concentrations of the components (in this case between 10 and 50, an exact value depending on proportions of the components ).
If you want to make more some liquid solution by adding liquid solutions of the same ingredient, but with different concentration and keep the initial concentration, it's basically possible. However, you must have the liquid solution at at least two different concentrations, of which at least one is less than the initial concentration and at least one is more.
In your case if had also the liquid solution with the concentration 80 ng/mL, then blending 2 mL at 50 ng/mL, 3mL at 10 ng/mL and 4 mL at 80 ng/mL results in 9 mL containing 450 ng what means just 450/9=50 ng/mL.
Excuse me possible misunderstanding - I'm a mathematician, not a biologist/physician.
