Douglas -- I should be cautious about details, but the study connected students in more than one country via a popular smart phone application (i.e. not one created especially for the project).
The goal was to demonstrate the affordances of this application and learning design for improving cross-cultural understanding, because cultural information is an important part of language learning and also contributed to motivation.
There is actually both qualitative and quantitative data.
