Thank you very much for responding. Yes, I'd already been to that page. But, since the author didn't seem certain as to whether or not is was possible, I decided to ask the question here. I hate to exclude the two papers, so I'm not leaving any stone unturned. So, are you saying it is definite? There is no way I can use the papers with the information provided?

I tested out the formula on some random data. It seems to work for either Type I or Type II sums of squares, and whether or not there is an interaction. The result is partial eta-squared.

The formula is found in Richardson, 2011, "Eta squared and partial eta squared as measures of effect size in educational research".

Partial eta-squared = (F * DF1) / ((F * DF1) + DF2)

You got me to partial eta-squared, but that I know of, partial eta-squared can't be transformed to cohen's d or r for the meta-analysis. I've searched the internet for a formula for partial eta-squared to cohen's d. I found this:

It looks like I need the sum of the squares in order to get there, and I can't calculate that from the information I have. Or, am I misunderstanding this?

Hi, Kym Craig . Yes, eta-squared and partial eta-squared are different. And the eta-squareds, I think, should add up to the r-squared for the model, but the partials do not. I don't have anything that would be helpful to convert any of these to d or r. I know people try to pool comparable effect size statistics for meta analysis, but I can't imagine how it would make sense, for example, to convert eta-squared to d. But, again, not something I have experience with.

Not really. To date, I don't know of a way to calculate effect size for any F statistic beyond 1 way ANOVA. I threw out all the F statistics I had that were more than 1 way. For some, I was able to find the mean and SD, so I calculated an effect size from that.

Unfortunately, the link you sent me is to purchase the book, and as I am only a poor PhD students and the book is not available in my library, I want to be sure the information is there before I spend that much money. Just to be clear, does the book explain how to calculate effect size when the only information I have is : F(2, 33) = 4.08? I do not have means or standard deviations, I don't have access to individual scores either. The only information that was given in the journal was the result of the ANOVA. Thank you so much for your help.

I'm not statistician. But, the degrees of freedom in the numerator is 2, so the test involve three groups (an omnibus test), and I think calculating d from that would be meaningless.

I'm sorry, I'd prefer not to post my email on a public site like this. Thank you for the info on the website. I will take a look at the Noel Card book. I have finished my paper already. From everywhere I looked, I concluded that you cannot calculate an effect size from a two way ANOVA, so I either discarded the statistic, or I found ways to access the means and SD (writing authors, in tables, etc.). Yes, as far I understand you can calculate paritial eta square from F and dfs for even more complicated designs (e.g. for the power analysis of a study with the same design), but you cannot calculate generalized eta squared, which should be used for meta-analysis. So it seems that the answer actually depends on the purpose of the calculation :)

Also, I think if you have two groups then you can calculate t value from F value.

Since for 2 groups, F=t^2.

Hi Zaeem Hadi , thank you very much. Yes, that works for two groups, which is a one way ANOVA. Unfortunately the 2 in my statistic indicates 3 comparisons - a two way ANOVA. I simply did not use those statistics.

My answer is marked - it's not possible. I didn't look closely at what you sent me, but it looks also like it is only for one way ANOVAs. I don't see any mention (in a very quick scan) of being able to transform two-way ANOVAs with the limited information I had.
