sometimes we can see a wide ranges of color(from light to dark)in one type of essence. for example in thymus daenensis( yellow to orange). can we consider this parameter as a sign of quality variation
Many times, colour changes imply some extent of oxidation. The best way is to compare the MS of the original essence with that of the problem sample. I hope this will be useful for you.
Colour of essential oil can not give good indication for the quality of the essential oil for example if you add a colourless oil to chamomile oil which has a blue color you can not notice a drastic change in the color...so the best method to determine the quality of the essential oil is to perform GC-MS analysis.
The quality of essential oils is determined by their physico-chemical characteristics (color, odor, specific gravity etc.) and chemical profiles. These two are influenced by genetic, physiological, environmental, management, processing, post-isolation storage etc. factors. Changes in color, density and other physical parameters occur due to distillation technique, storage condition/duration, mixture of water, presence of oxygen, exposure to light etc. Odor of an essential oil is a better indicator of essential quality.
