I agree that traditional PCR is not good method for that. BUT if you don't have any other option You can try to estimate strength of amplicon by comparing it with amplicon obtained from samples with known quantitative value obtained in the same PCR reaction. In that case compared amplicon has to be amplified by the same primers.
If you ever want to publish your data, you need to use qPCR. Semi-quantitative data aren't worth the effort you'll put into making them and are not publishable. Find a collaborator.
Semi quantitative PCR will give you little information about whether the genes is expressed or not. it will not give you any idea about the expression level of this gene.
