Both Cetirizine Hydrochloride (10 mg) and Rupatadine (10 mg) tablets work as an antihistamine. Sometimes physicians suggest taking either one to relieve from allergy. In severe cases, few patients intake both tablets in a day. Is it harmful to the patients, and how many days these tablets should be continued?
The molecules have similar pharmacological actions, H1 receptor blockade. So, it does not seem rationale to use both simultaneously. However, for rupatadine, doses of up to 20 mg has been studied - see link below. The duration of therapy would be dependent on the clinical picture - shorter periods (5 to 7 days) for acute conditions, whilst chronic use would probably be needed for perennial allergic rhinitis or chronic urticaria.
As a seasonal allergic rhinitis sufferer, I adjust my treatment with the seasons - higher oral antihistamine dosing with concomitant corticosteroid nasal spray during the change of seasons and corticosteroid nasal spray normally suffices in winter.
