Life Cycle Analysis plays significant role in many research proposals and is one of the main significant criteria that exist during the evaluation process. It’s mainly used (beside others) to calculate the carbon footprint of several operations and or several procedures. However, remain unclear if a complete and detailed LCA can be done, in order to compare with the state of the art. In addition, this because systems boundaries can change all the time. What is your opinion?
It depends on your target. Comparative LCAs work very well. Establishing an environmental impact analysis for the life of a product is a different animal. LCA impact categories hide details. The methodology of the LCA, the approach, and the standardized impact categories, data bases are pretty useful.
I prefer to work with raw data, have the process map, analyze all emissions and impacts one by one, or choose the significant ones as indicators. For climate change impact I vot for using emission calculations instead of LCA.
it is probably more moot at this time to ask if a research team can afford to complete a serious life cycle analyses. Many funding organisations are now insisting on a clear program management that includes a detailed LCA. So no LCA = no funding.
Most big industry now includes the LCA / programme management costs in their estimates.
So my best guess is there is no real alternative if you want your research to go forward.
At first, the primary information should be as transparent as possible, this is the real basis to carry out a real LCA. Then, the criterion to select the secondary information (outside productions systems) plays an important role in the LCA. Sometimes, and in the majority of cases, this can highly alter the results. The selection of a good secondary information is crucial to gain accurate in the final results. A lack of procedures to close the gap or fulfill the missing information is a matter of concern.
Yes, we can do detailed LCA. But, the objective doing LCA is more important to frame the methodology to deal with inputs and outputs. The prime concern in doing LCA is the decision to do LCA, bcs the amount of data required to perform LCA is too big to deal with.
