I am trying to estimate the population of small burrowing mammals with the use of camera traps but I am lacking a robust methods for it. I found the use of Mark Capture - Recapture in many of the studies but I am looking for other methods than this. Also, I am looking for availability of model as well.
My take it won't be an effective approach to estimate the percentage population, except you population is a factor of what is called a quadrant of the total population of species in that area. Consequently of you take a quadrant of the area, the traps can be used to estimate the population of that quadrant.

I think you need to consult the books or experts on the behavior of such animals and where they prefer to live. This study is important to distribute the surveillance cameras to cover the intended areas.
The other issue, I think, is that to choose the most proper locations of the cameras.
Then you can build a so-called wireless sensor networks WSN where every camera will be considered a node in the WSN network.
In this way you can cover the area with the sensors. The rate of image capture is determined to full observe the animals.
The images taken by the cameras are sent to some to a control center where the collected pictures are processed to identify the animals.
In summary my proposal is to establish a WSN in the existing areas of such animals
